With Father’s Day being this Sunday I felt it would be kind of cliché to do a post about fathers, but The Lord put that in my heart so I’ll go with it. Who knows better then your Heavenly Father anyways?!
When I was growing up my dad used to tell me, “You can learn the easy way, by learning from my mistakes or you can learn the hard way by going off and making the same mistakes yourself”. Like most people I took a little from column A and a little from column B. When I would go off and do my own thing and get myself into trouble or in a situation where my dad had to intervene he never said much. I think he knew he had already said everything that was going to get through my thick skull. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t disappointed and frustrated because chances are we had just talked about said situation.
Now that I’m a dad I know that I’m going to face similar challenges and frustrations, as a matter of a fact most days I already do. Putting this all together it really gives me a new appreciation for the way God loves us. Our love is imperfect, because we are imperfect beings. Yet our hearts break when we see our children hurt, just like I could see the pain in my dad’s eyes when I was going through particularly hard times in my life. But God’s love IS perfect and a lot of times we don’t bat an eye at turning our backs to him or ignoring his heavenly advice. So how much more must he be hurting at those times? Those time when we tell Him that we know best and He doesn’t know what it’s like for us. He knows, He created us and sent his only Son to die for our sins.
So on this Father’s Day I’d like to let my Earthly Father and my Heavenly Father know that I love them and I appreciate everything that they’ve done and continues to do for me.
Saint Joseph pray for us and all fathers…
