Parish Spotlight: San Jose Catholic Church

Published July 22, 2015 • Written by Martina Filed Under: Parish Spotlight

Parish Spotlight is an Austin Catholic New Media series dedicated to highlighting and sharing information about the various parishes in the Austin Diocese. Did you know the diocese is home to 127 parishes? In this series, we hope to bring not just facts to your attention, but a sense of community that will help you connect with each church. In this feature, we will be taking a look at San José Catholic Church in Austin.

Father Alberto Borruel, pastor of San José

Driving down Oltorf Street in Austin, one might not automatically suspect a church would be tucked away and hidden behind the trees of a modest side street – but there it sits, nestled behind a row of homes. The history of San José Catholic Church goes back 75 years to a small church which still stands on West Mary Street. It was founded by Father Mendez of the Order of Holy Cross.

The current parish, which was built in 1985, was the largest parish in the entire diocese until 2008, and still remains the largest parish in the city of Austin. Under Father Kirby’s pastorship, San José became a diocesan church. Today, it is the home to the annual pro-life Mass each January, when many flock to the campus each year before taking to the streets in defense of the lives of unborn children.

I have a particular affection for San José, not just because Father Alberto Borruel {former associate pastor at my current home parish of St. William in Round Rock} is the current pastor, but also because it’s where I was married many moons ago.
