May 11, 2014 – Fourth Sunday of Easter

Reading 1
ACTS 2:14A, 36-41
This week’s first reading pick’s up again where we left off last Sunday in St Peter’s sermon that converted the 3,000. In fact you might feel like you’ve heard this before. The first verse is the exact same last week’s first sentence, but then we move forward to the part we left off. It’s used as a reminder that we’re still in the same sermon.
In this part of the sermon, St. Peter appeals to the love of the heritage of the Jewish people. Judaism was already an old religion by this point and there was a comfort in seeing the connection between the old and the new. We then see how his words touched them so much they were moved to action.

Reading 2
1 Peter 2:20B-25
This week’s second reading also picks up where we left off last week. We hear in the letter of Peter of suffering and trial that comes after baptism and conversion. It is easy to give up, but it takes faith to endure the trials. Even when it doesn’t seem like it, He is still in charge, and we can trust that He will save us from our trials in the end. Nothing will go in vain.
Gospel
John 10:1-10
This week’s Gospel from St John uses a lot of sheep imagery. Sometimes this language can be lost on our generation, but Jesus likes to keep it simple. Sheep are faithful animals and know that it’s for their own good to only follow their shepherd. Sometimes we stray and follow the other voices. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and know that He will never lead us astray. John 10:10 is one of my favorite passages: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” We can’t live as if living through the sheep gate is a burden or chore, our life should proclaim this goodness.
