Last week Kathryn wrote a post about “Stop Apologizing for Your Catholic Faith“. Well last night Cardinal Dolan didn’t need to apologize as he walked into what is being called the most pro-abortion Democratic National Convention of all time and prayed openly for the protection of the unborn. What Cardinal Dolan did last night was to embody the spirit of the New Evangelization. Today more then ever we are charged with stepping out into the world and being a light in the darkness. Jesus tells us,
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man ‘against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s enemies will be those of his household.”
This is abundantly clear if you were to see my Twitter stream or my Facebook News Feed during each night of the last two conventions. Talking about faith and politics with a family member is never easy and coming from a culture that expects you to think one way make it that much harder. Thankfully my faith has embolden me to stand up for the truth in ways that I never thought that I could. My faith and God’s graces have allowed me to speak with a confidence to those who oppose the truth and are blinded by the lies that the world tries to feed us. Sometimes the hardest part of all of this is remembering to do it with love. For what good is it to win an argument, but to lose a soul. We may not all be ready to stand in front of a national audience in front of a hostile crowd. But like Cardinal Dolan we must not be afraid to do must be done. We can not be afraid to go where we must go and to say what must be said. Because honestly if we don’t who will?
