Open Combox: Your Take from Super Bowl XLVI

Published February 6, 2012 • Written by Brandon Kraft Filed Under: World and News

We’re trying something new for today at Austin Catholic New Media. The article will be on the shorter side, but with the open invite to continue the thread on the comment box below.

Last night, the New England Patriots and the New York Giants played a rematch of Super Bowl XLII with the Giants winning out in the end. The game was complete with an early safety, a “buttdown”, a catch that demonstrated why football players practice all day every day. What was your favorite moment? The commercial that worked the best on you? Funniest? Commentary that made you think?

Here are the rules:

  • Say something. Marketers and social media geeks have cruntched numbers of all kinds figuring out the tiny percentage of readers that actually leave comment on an article. It’s okay to be a first-time commenter! No login needed… just a name and an e-mail address (the no one will see besides ACNM administrators).
  • Be social. If someone has mentioned something that you were going to say, reply to their comment.
  • Be civil. There’s no reason not to be civil in our comment boxes, but seems like a good idea to mention it either way.

I’ll kick things off in the comment boxes below with a few takes. Don’t limit yourself to my “questions”! Have fun!

ChurchMag (http://www.churchm.ag , a Christian website about the intersection of technology and church), had a good “cold water in the face” post about the horrible sex trafficking that takes place around Super Bowl weekend.

Apparently, which I guess makes some sick sense, traffickers use the large male population as a good reason to bring girls in from across the country..,http://churchm.ag/the-biggest-reason-to-hate-the-super-bowl/

Bishop Christopher Coyne is awesome. He’s an auxiliary bishop (like the associate pastor of a diocese) in Indy and a huge Pats fan. His Twitter feed last night was one of the most entertaining during the night.

    https://twitter.com/bishopcoyne

I think the best part of it though is his tweets are one of the best vocation “ads” I’ve seen in awhile. The priesthood is made up of normal guys who love God. Priests don’t lose their sense of humor, their personality or anything that makes them them.

I loved the tweet, after they lost, where the bishop says “I’m wearing the black for the rest of my life in mourning”.

In what seems to be a trend in the past few years I was really disappointed by the ads this year. Maybe it’s side-effect of me getting older and moving closer to the old side of the target demographic but most of them in my opinion were just “eh”.

I do have to say I thought the M&M commercial was the best of the night.

Great Super Bowl!  My Giants won!  Good times.  My favorite moment was Manningham’s catch that got us a very needed first down AND he kept 2 feet in!  I feel like I didn’t see too many commercials as I was hosting a party, but one of the funny one’s was the Chevy one with the yellow sports car that the graduate thought his parents were giving him for graduation.  Lol!

I liked the Chevy commercial as well. Interesting note on that one. If you ever listen to the Busted Halo radio show on XM the screaming grad is the psudo-phone boy Brett Siddell. Catholic Media taking over the world! 🙂

I liked the Chevy commercial and that Audi vampire party ad (way to make fun of the ever-so-trendy vampires!) But my favorite had to be the VW commercial with the dogs barking the Star Wars theme…. I just cracked up with the dog dressed like the AT-AT Walker!

On a somewhat related note. I really liked the video released for St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Indy. Great way to invite people in to visit Jesus.

Rick Nagel, their priest, is a former co-worker of mine.  He is an incredible man and now priest!  Indy is our old stomping grounds and I was so proud of how Rick and his congregation really embraced the influx of people in Indy and used it as a tool to evangelize.  Awesome!

Jason, I’m like you, I wasn’t a huge fan of very many commercials (admittedly, I DVRed the game so I could skip to the stuff I wanted to see).  But, I especially loved that McDonald’s donated their ad time to their Foundation.  It touched my heart very much.  It’s too bad we don’t have more commercials like that during the game.  I HATED that in an age of “strong women” we chose to objectify them.  Sex may sell but it doesn’t mean it’s right.

Agreed. I wrote (somewhat) about GoDaddy on my personal blog today. Their ads are 80% why I stopped doing business with them.

That was actually the ad I had in mind when I wrote that.  I big puffy heart Jillian Michaels, but she sunk to a whole new low in that ad.  She talks about being a strong woman and making good choices in her workout videos and then she does something stupid like that.  sigh.

Twas an ugly game with a few beautiful plays.  But it was tight all throughout and hats off to the G’Men for coming away with the W.  Brady is going to have nightmares of the Giants defensive line for years.
