Lights, Camera, Potty Humor!

Being the father of young children we watch our fair share of kid’s movies. If you’ve watched any of these over the years you’ve noticed a growing trend of inserting “adult” humor that normally goes over the heads of the kiddos.  Now while I can appreciate a certain amount of this. Especially after watching the first ten minutes of “Gnomeo and Juliet”, our latest kid’s movie night entry. Sometimes I find myself asking Melissa, “did they just say that?”

I’ve also noticed that there is a direct correlation to the quality of the movie and the amount of adult humor that is inserted into it.  Like any other movie that is weak on story and character development, all can be put right by the addition of the right amount of potty humor and sophomoric pranks.  At least that’s what the creators of such films would want you to believe.  It doesn’t have to be this way though. There are plenty of examples of good movies that are being made for kids that won’t cause parents to tear their eyes out, Pixar proves this time and time again.

So before you take out another mortgage to take your kids to the movies make sure you are doing your due diligence and checking solid movie review sites. Sites like Catholic News Service, Decent Films.com, and our site as we continue to build out our network of contributors to include movie reviews.

This is definitely one of the ways where you really feel what it’s like to be counter cultural in our Faith. Thanks for sharing that we don’t have to give in to the crude humor!
