Sunday Says

Reading 1
Wisdom 7:7-11

In this week’s first reading from the book of Wisdom, we hear a section of praises for Sophia (Wisdom), but her name is never mentioned. The writer is promoting a continued adherence to the traditions of their faith when so many are losing them among the changing cultures and pagan traditions that surround them.

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 90:12-13, 14-15, 16-17

  1. (14) Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!

Reading 2
Hebrews 4:12-13

This week’s second reading from the letter to the Hebrews, we hear a very short reading that praises Sacred Scripture. As familiar or boring as the readings in the Holy Mass may seem, there is a living power in the Word that comes from God.

The second theme in this tiny reading is focused on God’s omniscient power that extends beyond our understanding. No matter how much we would like to change or hide, there is no way that we can go beyond the Lord.

Alleluia
Matthew 5:3

  1. Alleluia, alleluia.

Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Gospel
Mark 10:17-30

This week’s Gospel is from a familiar but difficult chapter from St Mark. Money is often seen as a form of earthly success, but Jesus uses some bold words to reveal how much of an obstacle it is for us to be closer to God.

Jesus even takes it to a deeper level to reveal that it is impossible for any human to be able to get to heaven on their own power. It is only possible by the generosity and grace of the Father, because nothing is impossible for the Lord.

Gospel Meditation from Bishop Vásquez

Reflection question

Biblical wisdom is to recognize God as the true source and fulfillment of all. Things are temporary and fleeting. Have we allowed God’s word to penetrate us? Do we really rely upon God entirely or do we trust in our own means? God asks us to rely on him completely. What possessions, relationship or practices are we unwilling to give up to follow Christ?
