Relationships 101: Is Male Self-Confidence Attractive?

Published August 5, 2013 • Written by Britt Echtenkamp Filed Under: Blog, Faith, Family, Marriage and Love, Young Adult

Part Two of the Relationship 101 Series. See Part One here.

I was recently asked about self-confidence in men, and if it is attractive to women. I’m no expert, but below is my attempt to answer specifically the posed questions:

In closing, healthy self-confidence is attractive to lots of women (that I know, anyway). But plenty of girls like shy guys, too. No matter where you are in this development, know that we all have our struggles. Most of us are trying (and failing sometimes) to grow in ways that will help us succeed. But life is hard. Love is hard. Give yourself some credit for where you are, be gentle with yourself, and just keep trying. God thinks you’re pretty great, and if you’re called to marriage, there’s a lady out there who thinks that, too.

If you have relationship/dating questions, please feel free to send them my way! I’d be happy to address them in this series.

Confidence is often a sign of stupidity and ignorance, too. Dunning-Kruger effect. “idiots get confident while the smart get modest, an idea that was around long before Dunning and Kruger’s day. Bertrand Russell once said, ‘In the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full
of doubt.’ From his essay ‘The Triumph of Stupidity’, published in 1933.” – http://wildfiretoday.com/2010/05/12/stupid-people-are-confident-while-the-intelligent-are-doubtful/

I’m not saying that is always the case, but we have all seen Dunning-Kruger in action http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolved-primate/201006/when-ignorance-begets-confidence-the-classic-dunning-kruger-effect

I am a native Texan, cradle Catholic, and lover of live music and all things chocolate. I graduated with my MA in Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling from Texas State University, and am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor. I love writing, and have been in love with it since the 3rd grade when I wrote a response to 'The Polar Express'. Ever since that day I have been writing about what I see, trying to make sense of myself and the world I live in.
