{"id":90244,"date":"2015-02-24T07:30:45","date_gmt":"2015-02-24T13:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/?p=90244"},"modified":"2015-02-24T07:30:46","modified_gmt":"2015-02-24T13:30:46","slug":"garden-grow-sowing-seeds-contemplative-prayer-daily-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2015\/02\/garden-grow-sowing-seeds-contemplative-prayer-daily-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Contemplative Prayer Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Secular Discalced Carmelites of the Diocese of Austin will hold a workshop on contemplation and prayer at St. Elizabeth\u2019s Catholic Church in Pflugerville in honor of the 500th Anniversary of the birth of Doctor of the Church, St. Teresa of Jesus (St. Teresa of Avila), Carmelite reformer and co-foundress of the Discalced Carmelites, to share her teachings on prayer to benefit the larger community.<\/p>\n<p>The charism of the Order of Discalced Carmelites is prayer, and the Apostolate of our community is to share the spiritual treasures of Carmel with the wider Church and with the world.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90336\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Unknown-1.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90336\" class=\"wp-image-90336 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Unknown-1-201x190.jpeg?resize=201%2C190\" alt=\"Unknown-1\" width=\"201\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-90336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Discalced Carmelite Shield<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We will have seven speakers on topics ranging from the basics of prayer to distractions in prayer, to deepening prayer. Three workshops and the keynote address will be offered in both English and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>St. Teresa\u2019s teachings on prayer are both beautiful and practical. Rather than intimidating or overly esoteric, her spiritual richness is accessible, simple and wise like the homespun advice of a good mother.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Korves, O.C.D.S., who is organizing the event, said the program is for anyone who wants to learn more about prayer and spirituality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>St. Teresa said, <em>\u201cThe Lord is within us, and we ought not leave Him there alone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90248\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/St.-Teresa-of-Avila2-150x150.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90248\" class=\"wp-image-90248 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/St.-Teresa-of-Avila2-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"St.-Teresa-of-Avila2-150x150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-90248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St, Teresa of Jesus<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS) is a part of the Oklahoma Province of Discalced Carmelites. Under the direction and spiritual guidance of the Discalced Carmelite friars, the local communities meet monthly to learn and grow in the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience, and in the practice of the Beatitudes according to their individual states in life, married or single. Following the teachings of the founders of the order, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, the order is a school of prayer assisting those desiring to grow closer to God through the Carmelite spirituality, living lives that are disposed to contemplation while being engaged in the world. In the Diocese of Austin, there are three OCDS communities; in Austin, Killeen and Georgetown.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Pope Francis has said, <em>\u201cYou must realize that studying without prayer is no use. We must pray to Jesus to get to know him better. The great theologians did their theology while kneeling. Pray to Jesus! By studying and praying we get a bit closer\u2026 But we\u2019ll never know Jesus without praying. Never! Never!\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Prayer is the nourishment, the breath and life of the Christian soul. Communion with God is for everyone. We all stand in God\u2019s presence.
