Required for those participating in the Center&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbcenter.org\/programs\/bioethics-certification\">National Catholic Certification Program in Health Care Ethics<\/a>, these seminars are open to all engaged in, or preparing to engage in health care ministries consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.\u00a0 These seminars are intended\u00a0to benefit health care workers, clergy, those involved in research in the life sciences, members of ethics committees, and others who provide spiritual support and counsel to patients and their families. Those interested in understanding and advancing the Church\u2019s moral tradition\u00a0in health care will also find them accessible and informative.<\/p>\n<p>The organizing framework for the curriculum is the application of\u00a0<em>The Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services<\/em>\u00a0to critical issues raised in medicine and the life sciences. The seminars are structured to equip participants with the awareness to present, analyze, and resolve complex bioethical dilemmas encountered in clinical education and research from an interdisciplinary perspective.\u00a0Faculty for each seminar includes NCBC Staff Ethicists and other distinguished experts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Objectives:<\/h3>\n<p>The objectives of the Seminar include the training of those engaged in health care ministry and other interested individuals to effectively represent the Church&#8217;s moral teaching in their various institutions as it is summarized in\u00a0<em>The Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services<\/em>.\u00a0Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Understand how the inherent dignity of the human person serves as the objective basis for the Church&#8217;s moral tradition in health care.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0State the Church&#8217;s moral teaching as expressed in\u00a0<em>The Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services<\/em>\u00a0to resolve complex dilemmas encountered in clinical education, practice and research.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Identify some of the resources available to health care workers and others involved in the health care ministry which provide guidance for the resolution of bioethical issues.<\/p>\n<h3>Seminar Topics:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Assisted Reproductive Technologies<\/li>\n<li>Prenatal and Neonatal Complications<\/li>\n<li>Stem Cell Research and Cloning<\/li>\n<li>Ordinary and Extraordinary Means<\/li>\n<li>Transgender and Gender Dysphoria<\/li>\n<li>Determination of Death and Organ Transplantation<\/li>\n<li>Issues of Cooperation between Catholic and Non-Catholic Institutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Continuing Education Credit Opportunities:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center is accredited by the Connecticut State Medical Society to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center designates this Seminar for a maximum of 12 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)\u2122. \u00a0Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.<\/li>\n<li>The National Association of Catholic Chaplains has approved this program for 12 Continuing Education Hours.<\/li>\n<li>This Continuing Nursing Education Activity has been approved by\u00a0Thomas Jefferson University Hospital an approved provider of continuing nursing education\u00a0(CNE)\u00a0by\u00a0the\u00a0Pennsylvania\u00a0State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center\u2019s Commission on Accreditation.\u00a0A maximum of 12.0 nursing contact hours will be awarded for this program.
