{"id":50673,"date":"2014-08-23T22:05:14","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T03:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/?p=50673"},"modified":"2014-08-25T13:59:35","modified_gmt":"2014-08-25T18:59:35","slug":"sunday-says-podcast-august-24-2014-mass-readings-reflections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2014\/08\/sunday-says-podcast-august-24-2014-mass-readings-reflections\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Says Podcast \u2013 August 24, 2014 Mass Readings and Reflections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SundaySaysPodcast-logo.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-41486\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SundaySaysPodcast-logo-300x231.jpg?resize=246%2C190\" alt=\"SundaySaysPodcast-logo\" width=\"246\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[powerpress]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.universalis.com\/20140824\/mass.htm\"><strong>Sunday August 24, 2014<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lectionary: 121<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Twenty-first Sunday of Ordinary Time <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/082414.cfm\"><strong>(NAB Translation)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the Sunday Says podcast for August 24, 2014, the Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time.\u00a0 Thank you for joining us as we begin preparing our hearts and minds for Mass by diving deeper into the Word of God.\u00a0 The readings this week take us into the mystery of the Church and its governance through the chair of Peter but in also a continuation of the house of David from the Old Testament.\u00a0 \u00a0Let\u2019s go ahead and get started.\u00a0 We are using the New Jerusalem translation for copyright purposes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/isaiah\/22:19\"><strong>Isaiah 22:19-23<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first reading from the book of Isaiah is a text that Jesus uses as the basis for conferring authority on Peter.\u00a0 To understand this, we go back to the historical context in the Old Testament.\u00a0\u00a0 This takes place about 300 years after the time King David.\u00a0 The northern kingdom of Israel has recently been taken into captivity by the Assyrians under King Sargon II and now the southern kingdom of Judah is under threat by Sargon\u2019s son Sennacherib.\u00a0 The king of Judah at the time is King Hezekiah, one of the few relatively good kings from Old Testament times.\u00a0 Hezekiah has a Prime Minister, named Shebna, who has authority over the kingdom.\u00a0 God, however, is displeased with him, and through the prophet Isaiah, is told that he is being replaced by a new prime minister named Eliakim.\u00a0 \u201cThus says the Lord of Hosts to Shebna, the master of the palace: I dismiss you from your office, I remove you from your post, and the same day I call on my servant Eliakim son of Hilkiah\u201d. \u00a0\u00a0When Isaiah says, \u201c<strong>I place the key of the House of David on his shoulder;\u00a0 should he open, no one shall close, should he close, no one shall open<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0 he provides the very words that Jesus will use in conferring the keys of the kings of the kingdom on to Peter.\u00a0 Theologian Scott Hahn explains that \u201cwhen Jesus gives to Peter the keys of the kingdom, Peter is receiving the Prime Minister&#8217;s office, which means dynastic authority from the Son of David, Jesus, the King of Israel, but also an office where there will be dynastic succession,\u201d thus creating what was to be the office of the Pope.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>See this article for more information. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholic-pages.com\/pope\/hahn.asp\">http:\/\/www.catholic-pages.com\/pope\/hahn.asp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsorial Psalm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/138:1\"><strong>Psalm 138:1-2,<\/strong><\/a><strong>2-3,6,8<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The response for the responsorial Psalm is \u201cLord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Second reading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/romans\/11:33\"><strong>Romans 11:3<\/strong><\/a><strong>3-36<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Second Reading is from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans.\u00a0 In this passage St. Paul reminds us of a common theme, that is that God\u2019s ways are far beyond what we can comprehend.\u00a0 Often we are challenged and confused by the evil and suffering in the world and wonder how good can come of these situations.\u00a0 Our attitude must be one of faith and humility recognizing that we don\u2019t have the capacity to see the full picture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/16:13\">\u00a0<strong>Matthew 16:13-20<\/strong> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our reading from the Gospel of Matthew is the primary text used to explain the primacy of chair of St. Peter over the Church.\u00a0\u00a0 It begins with Jesus asking Peter a critical question, \u201cWho do you say that I am?\u201d His answer is profound, although Peter probably doesn\u2019t understand all the implications of what he is saying. \u201d Peter responds, &#8220;You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.&#8221; \u00a0By giving this answer Peter is confessing that Jesus is the Messiah for whom the people had been waiting.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But Jesus makes it clear that the source of this insight was God himself.\u00a0 \u201c\u2018Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven.\u201d\u00a0 Then we hear the amazing words, \u201cSo I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it.
