{"id":478150,"date":"2017-09-26T20:05:19","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T01:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/?p=478150"},"modified":"2017-11-09T22:53:51","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T04:53:51","slug":"st-therese-day-family-traditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/st-therese-day-family-traditions\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Therese Day Family Traditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: inherit\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-478156\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/images.jpg?resize=274%2C184\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: inherit\">Here is how my daughters and I celebrated St. Therese day, (October 1) when they were growing up, and we still do!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After dinner on the evening of St. Therese day, we read the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Gods-Little-Flower-Therese-Lisieux\/dp\/1929039050\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1506471866&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=god%27s+little+flower\">God&#8217;s Little Flower, the story of St. Therese.<\/a> Even after the girls were &#8220;too old&#8221; for this book, we still read it. I still have it, and whoever is home, we read it after dinner. It&#8217;s a very good book, and is a good introduction to the life and spiritual discoveries of St. Therese for adults as well. In fact, we have used it for that purpose to good effect in the past.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_478155\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-478155\" class=\"wp-image-478155 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/22052649_1431608493622303_1705587658_n-285x190.jpg?resize=285%2C190\" alt=\"St. Therese\" width=\"285\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-478155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosie and Maire ready to deliver!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After that, having bought earlier in the day, as many roses as we could possibly afford, my girls and I, and whoever else wants to participate (friends, boyfriends, whoever) go out and randomly hand out roses to people. You should try this. No explanation necessary. They&#8217;re free, and that means free from any requirement to listen to us. Just free, like the love of God. If people ask, we tell them about St.Therese and that we honor her promise to &#8220;let fall a shower of roses from Heaven.&#8221; But otherwise we just hand them to people, or ask them, &#8220;Would you like a rose?&#8221; They will feel great and you will too. I promise if you do this, especially over many years, you will have some great stories you will tell again and again. We sure do!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-478157\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/16105805_10212375146038199_4172898239824908848_n.jpg?resize=300%2C168\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Often, I will make a <em><strong>St. Therese Rose Petal Pound Cake.<\/strong><\/em> Here&#8217;s the recipe.<\/p>\n<p>You will need:<\/p>\n<p>1 lb sweet butter, softened<br \/>\n3 cups sugar<br \/>\n6 eggs<br \/>\n1 cup milk<br \/>\n2 tablespoons rose water (yes, it&#8217;s edible and at your grocery store)<br \/>\n1 tablespoon baking powder<br \/>\n4 cups flour<\/p>\n<p>a little powdered sugar for dusting<br \/>\nBaker&#8217;s sweet chocolate (about half a 4 oz. box)<br \/>\norganic rose petals (Please don&#8217;t use store bought roses for this as they might be sprayed with insecticides&#8230; another choice would be to use them but take them off before you eat!)<\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 350.<br \/>\nCream together butter and sugar<br \/>\nAdd eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.<br \/>\nSift together dry ingredients.<br \/>\nMix together milk and rose water<br \/>\nAdd dry and wet to butter mixture alternately.<br \/>\nMix gently by hand after each.<\/p>\n<p>Pour into buttered and floured tube or bundt pan (or two loaf pans). Bake 1 hour, or till toothpick or fork into center comes out dry.<br \/>\nAfter the cake cools ten minutes, turn out onto a plate.<br \/>\nCool completely.<br \/>\nDrizzle with melted chocolate<br \/>\nDust with powdered sugar<br \/>\nSprinkle with rose petals<\/p>\n<p>We usually had a brief family prayer service in honor of St. Therese, based on Evening Prayer for her feast day, but adjusted for the age of the audience. \ud83d\ude42 For the Littles this might be a few short prayers and a song.
