Welcome to the Sunday Says podcast for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, February 16, 2014.<\/p>\n

This Sunday\u2019s readings focus on the Law <\/i>as defined in the Old Testament and fulfillment<\/i> of that Law in Christ in the New Testament.<\/p>\n

Our readings this week, as always, are from the New Jerusalem translation for copyright purposes.\u00a0 The readings this week are longer than usual so let\u2019s get started.<\/p>\n

Reading 1<\/b><\/p>\n

Sirach 15:15-20<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

In the First Reading, from the book of Sirach we are reminded that because we have free will, we always have a choice whether to obey or not obey God.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God\u2019s rules are not forced on us but failure to obey always has natural negative consequences\u00a0\u00a0 We abuse<\/b> our freedom when we disobey God.\u00a0 However, we use<\/b> our freedom appropriately when seek to follow God\u2019s law not only in our actions but also in our hearts.<\/p>\n

Responsorial Psalm<\/b><\/p>\n

Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

In the Responsorial Psalm,<\/b> the response of \u201cBlessed are they who follow the law of the Lord\u201d continues the theme of obedience to God\u2019s word.\u00a0 Love for God should translate into a staunch desire to know God\u2019s will and to do His will to the best of our ability as our top priority and burning desire.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Reading 2<\/b><\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 2:6-10<\/b><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

The Second Reading is from St. Paul’s first Letter to the Corinthians(2:6-10)<\/b>. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Paul contrasts worldly wisdom with the unique wisdom that comes from God only through the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 This wisdom is a wisdom that revealed<\/b> wisdom.\u00a0\u00a0 It is something that people would never figure out on their own.\u00a0 \u00a0It makes no sense, and is even scandalous to the rulers and trend-setters of the world. \u00a0But this wisdom is rooted in the mystery of God and contains a promise so wonderful that it surpasses anything we can imagine in this life.\u00a0 \u00a0A glimpse of this mystery has been revealed in Christ and becomes more accessible as we mature in faith and submit ourselves to the cross of Christ.<\/p>\n

Gospel<\/b><\/p>\n

Matthew 5:17-37<\/b><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

Our Gospel reading taken from St. Matthew\u2019s Gospel and covers a lot of territory. \u00a0\u00a0Here we see Jesus confirm the continuing value of the Old Testament and the moral law given in the Old Testament. However, Jesus proceeds to unpack what the Law is all about – \u00a0that the Law essentially is only a starting point. \u00a0What is truly important is that our obedience to the Law go beyond mere externals.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus sees the Scribes and Pharisees distorting the intentions of the Law and warns us not to do the same.\u00a0 Assuming our obedience comes from love it would make sense that our desire would be to follow the spirit<\/b> of the law as well as the letter.\u00a0\u00a0 But without watering anything down, Jesus explains the deeper meanings of the commandments and makes it clear just what aspects of the moral law he cares about.\u00a0 In fact, many of the Church\u2019s teachings that so many people take issue with come from Christ\u2019s own words in this passage.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0These teachings were a major challenge to the paganized world of Jesus\u2019 time and remain so in ours.<\/p>\n
