{"id":43138,"date":"2013-12-27T11:40:49","date_gmt":"2013-12-27T17:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/?p=43138"},"modified":"2013-12-29T11:54:54","modified_gmt":"2013-12-29T17:54:54","slug":"sunday-says-podcast-december-29-2013-mass-readings-reflections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2013\/12\/sunday-says-podcast-december-29-2013-mass-readings-reflections\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Says Podcast \u2013 December 29, 2013 Mass Readings and Reflections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SundaySaysPodcast-logo1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-41487 aligncenter\" alt=\"SundaySaysPodcast-logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SundaySaysPodcast-logo1-300x231.jpg?resize=300%2C231\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>[powerpress]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.universalis.com\/20131229\/mass.htm\">Sunday December 29, 2013<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lectionary 17<\/p>\n<p><b>The Feast of the Holy Family (<a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/122913.cfm\">NAB Translation<\/a>)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Each year we have twelve official days of Christmas to contemplate the mystery of the incarnation and to meditate on the humanity of Christ as well as his divinity.\u00a0\u00a0 The Feast of the Holy Family is one of the feasts woven into the twelve days of Christmas where we reflect on Jesus\u2019 family and what it can teach us about the meaning and purpose of our own human families.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 1027px; height: 49px;\" width=\"1027\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/sirach\/3:2\"><b>Reading 1<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/sirach\/3:2\"><b>Sirach 3:3-7,14-17<\/b><\/a><b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In the First Reading, from the book of <b>Sirach<\/b>, we are given what is essentially a meditation on the fourth commandment, Honor your father and your mother. \u00a0\u00a0This passage reminds us that it really DOES matter that we teach children to respect their elders, that it really DOES matter how younger generations treat the older generation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This passage has much to say to our current youth culture where these values often have not been practiced or emphasized enough, resulting in family breakdown.\u00a0 We must decisively resist the temptation to ignore or disrespect our elders, which may not always be easy when their needs seem inconvenient or interfere with our personal ambitions or desires.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"right\">Responsorial Psalm<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/psalms\/128:1\"><b>Psalm 128:1-5<\/b><\/a><b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In the <b>Responsorial Psalm (128:1- 5),<\/b> the psalmist addresses the topic of family life and blesses those who &#8220;walk in the way of the Lord.&#8221; \u00a0\u00a0The main point of this Psalm is that family life has to be ultimately oriented towards God, and subordinated to God.\u00a0 When this happens, human relationships including families are more likely to be well-ordered, happy, and successful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"99%\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"right\">Reading 2<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/colossians\/3:12\"><b>Colossians 3:12-17<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The Second Reading is from St. Paul&#8217;s Letter to the <b>Colossians (3:12-21)<\/b>. This passage gives guidance on virtue in a pattern that scholars believe forms the structure of a primitive Christian catechism.\u00a0 When Saint Paul writes about \u201cclothing\u201d ourselves with virtues like humility and gentleness, etc.\u00a0 the language Paul uses gives a depiction of the Christian candidate coming up out of the baptismal font to be clothed with a fresh robe after their sins have been washed away through baptism.\u00a0\u00a0 This reading relates well to the Feast of the Holy family because it is truly in FAMILY LIFE where we begin to acquire these virtues and perhaps where they are most needed!<\/p>\n<p>There has been controversy regarding the verse that says, \u201cWives, give way to your husbands, as you should in the Lord.
