{"id":42611,"date":"2013-11-29T19:47:03","date_gmt":"2013-11-30T01:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/?p=42611"},"modified":"2013-12-02T09:35:03","modified_gmt":"2013-12-02T15:35:03","slug":"sunday-says-podcast-december-1-2013-mass-readings-reflections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2013\/11\/sunday-says-podcast-december-1-2013-mass-readings-reflections\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Says Podcast \u2013 December 1, 2013 Mass Readings and Reflections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"SundaySaysPodcast-logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SundaySaysPodcast-logo1-300x231.jpg?resize=300%2C231\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><\/p>\n<p>[powerpress]<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/120113.cfm\"><b>First\u00a0Sunday in Advent<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/universalis.com\/20131201\/mass.htm\"><b>Sunday December 1, 2013<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(Jerusalem Translation)<\/p>\n<p>Liturgy of the Word <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/120113.cfm\">(NAB Translation)<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0Lectionary: 1<\/p>\n<p>Each year we cycle through the liturgical seasons in order to contemplate God\u2019s mysteries again and again, that over time we may gain a deeper level of \u00a0understanding of these mysteries and that the insights revealed may have a more profound influence over us and impact the way we live our daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>You may recall that The Sunday Readings are on a three-year cycle which ensures that even if you only go Mass one day a week on Sundays that you will cover almost all of the New Testament and much of the rest of the Bible in three years.\u00a0\u00a0 We have just completed Year C \u2013 which covered the Synoptic gospel of Luke.\u00a0 Now we\u2019re starting YEAR A which will take us back to Matthew as our primary Gospel source.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/isaiah\/2\">Isaiah 2:1-5<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s first reading from the book of Isaiah sets the stage for the season of advent as the Old Testament prophet promises that a time is coming when people from around the world will come to God \u2013 The term \u201cmountain of the Lord\u201d is frequently used as a symbol of God\u2019s presence.\u00a0 The season of Advent is to help us metaphorically climb that same mountain and come to God.\u00a0 This reading also tells us of a totally revolutionary and radical transformation that will happen once all the nations actually come to God, saying that the conflicts brought about by our sinful human condition will be healed to the extent that \u201cthey shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.\u201d\u00a0 and \u201clambs lie down with lions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Responsorial Psalm, <\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/121\"><b>Psalm 121:1-2,4-5,6-9<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our responsorial <b>Psalm 121<\/b>, echoes a similar theme as the reading from Isaiah.\u00a0 This psalm was traditionally sung by the pilgrims as they went up to Jerusalem for the festivals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/romans\/13\"><b>Romans 13:11-14<\/b><b><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Second Reading comes from the letter of Saint Paul to the<b> Romans.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b>Here Paul gives a wake-up call to the Romans and to us as well\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is the traditional reading for the first Sunday of Advent with the message that since we simply do not know when our lives will end or the world will end, we must live every day fully awake, paying attention to the things in life <b>that really matter to God<\/b>, living holy lives and avoiding sin, on the \u2018lookout for\u2019 and ready to meet the Lord.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/24\"><b>Matthew 24:37-44<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In our reading from the <b>Gospel of Matthew, <\/b>we see a similar theme as Jesus reminds us of the time of Noah where people were so immersed in the here and now that they paid no attention to what life was truly about.\u00a0\u00a0 Paschasius Radbertus a monk and theologian who lived in the 8<sup>th<\/sup> century says in his commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, \u201cConsequently we must always be on the lookout for Christ\u2019s twofold coming, the <b>one<\/b> when we shall have to give an account of everything we have done, and the <b>other<\/b> when he comes day after day to stir our consciences.
