Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time<\/strong><\/p>\n (Jerusalem Bible<\/a>)<\/p>\n Liturgy of the Word for September 29, 2013 (NAB<\/a>)\u00a0Lectionary: 138<\/p>\n Reflection begins at 5:34 minute mark.<\/p>\n Sunday September 29, 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n Reading 1: \u00a0Amos 6:1,4-7<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n Amos was a prophet and a shepherd originally from the southern kingdom of Judah, who was sent by God to the northern kingdom of Israel around 786 B.C.\u00a0 This happened to be a time when some people were busy making a lot of money but losing their souls.\u00a0\u00a0 The overall message of Amos is \u201cwoe to the complacent\u201d.\u00a0 While the wealthy enjoyed their nice homes,\u00a0 good foods, and parties they were blinded to the poor around them.\u00a0\u00a0 While Amos does not condemn wealth, he does condemn the selfish use of wealth.<\/p>\n \u00a0Reading 2\u00a01 Timothy 6:11-16<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Gospel:\u00a0 Luke 16:19-31<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n In our reading from the Gospel of Luke <\/b>I am reminded of a homily by my former pastor, in which this reading was given the title \u201cThe Man who went to Hell for Doing Nothing\u201d.\u00a0 This reading indeed describes a rich man in Hell for not for what he DID, but what he did NOT do.\u00a0 Was it the rich man\u2019s fault that Lazarus suffered? \u00a0\u00a0Yes and no.\u00a0 The story doesn\u2019t say whether the rich man inflicted intentional <\/i>suffering on Lazarus which would clearly have been evil.\u00a0 However, the evil is what the Rich Man failed to do — the fact that he did nothing to ease Lazarus\u2019 suffering.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In our general confession at Mass, also known as the Confiteor, we are reminded of our Sins of omission<\/i><\/b>, in other words, not only what I have don<\/b>e<\/strong>, but also<\/i> what I have failed to do<\/span>.\u00a0 Like the first reading from the prophet Amos, we are called not<\/span> to be complacent\u2026.but to SEEK OPPORTUNTIES TO DO GOOD.\u00a0 It has been suggested that in the end perhaps our greatest regrets will be all the Good things we could have done but chose not to<\/span>.\u00a0 Throughout scripture we see God\u2019s attention is drawn to those who suffer. \u00a0This story is meant to give us pause.\u00a0 How often do we truly seek out the suffering in order to render mercy in the same way the God does?<\/p>\n \u00a0Theme song \u2013 Ignite \u2013 Soundwave\u00a0soundwave.cc\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n No Momentum<\/p>\n Chris Zabriskie:\u00a0 The Temperature of Air on the Bow of the Kaleetan<\/p>\n Jamie Evans:\u00a0 Opening Doors<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" \u00a0\u00a0[powerpress] Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time (Jerusalem Bible) Liturgy of the Word for September 29, 2013 (NAB)\u00a0Lectionary: 138 Reflection begins at 5:34 minute mark.
