{"id":415882,"date":"2017-06-04T23:45:11","date_gmt":"2017-06-05T04:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/?p=415882"},"modified":"2017-06-17T18:03:02","modified_gmt":"2017-06-17T23:03:02","slug":"strewing-flowers-corpus-christi-procession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2017\/06\/strewing-flowers-corpus-christi-procession\/","title":{"rendered":"Strewing Flowers at the Corpus Christi Procession"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_416812\" style=\"width: 498px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-416812\" class=\"size-large wp-image-416812\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/FlowersandEucharisticProcession-488x700.jpg?resize=488%2C700\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"700\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-416812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eucharistic Procession<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For centuries one of the customs at Corpus Christi processions is strewing (throwing) flowers before Jesus in the monstrance to proclaim Him our King in a very special and public manner. \u00a0Many saints have written about this wonderful experience but one of the most well known is St Therese of Lisieux (Doctor of the Church),<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_415883\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-415883\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-415883\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/therese2-cal4-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-415883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Therese of Lisieux strewing rose petals<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I loved especially the processions in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. \u00a0What a joy it was for me to throw flowers beneath the feet of God! \u00a0Before allowing them to fall to the ground, I threw them as high as I could, and I was never so happy as when I saw my roses touch the sacred monstrance.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In ancient times when earthly kings entered the city or left their castle, the people greeted the king with flowers and petals to express their love, loyalty, and to proclaim that they were joyful to be part of his kingdom. \u00a0In the past, it was also seen at weddings to express the people\u2019s love and acceptance. \u00a0Traditionally in the past, we do the same at Corpus Christi processions, \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow shall I show my love is proved by deeds? Well &#8211; the little child will strew flowers&#8230;she will embalm the Divine Throne with their fragrance, will sing with a silvery voice the canticle of love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, my Beloved, it is thus that my life&#8217;s brief day shall be spent before Thee. No other means have I of proving my love than to strew flowers; that is, to let no little sacrifice escape me, not a look, not a word, to avail of the very least actions and do them for Love. I wish to suffer for Love&#8217;s sake and for Love&#8217;s sake even to rejoice; thus shall I strew flowers. Not one shall I find without shedding its petals for Thee&#8230;and then I will sing, I will always sing, even if I must gather my roses in the very midst of thorns &#8211; and the longer and sharper the thorns the sweeter shall be my song.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><strong>St Therese of Lisieux<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gminalipno.pl\/jutro-boze-cialo\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-415884 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/EucharisticProcessionFlowerPetals-550x351.jpg?resize=550%2C351\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is in these processions where many have converted to Catholicism eg: Blessed Niels Steensen (1638 \u2013 1686), founding father of geology, paleontology, and crystallography. Blessed Niels, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Observed with curiosity and perplexity the Corpus Christi procession and the fervor surrounding it. Banners and tapestries were swinging in the gentle breeze coming from the sea&#8230;Petals and flowers rained down on all sides&#8230; how I could do nothing but offer Him the best of myself&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are looking for a Corpus Christi procession may I wholeheartedly recommend the one at Saint Mary Cathedral <\/span><a href=\"x-apple-data-detectors:\/\/3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Saturday, June 17, 2017 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following the\u00a05:30 P.M. vigil Mass.\u00a0Come process with Our Lord Jesus Christ as He blesses the four corners of the earth at four different altars in the city. \u00a0Come sing and pray from the Cathedral to the steps of Texas State Capitol, to the Texas State Cemetery, and ending with reposition at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a
