{"id":312059,"date":"2016-10-22T17:53:09","date_gmt":"2016-10-22T22:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/?p=312059"},"modified":"2016-10-22T17:53:09","modified_gmt":"2016-10-22T22:53:09","slug":"sunday-says-podcast-october-23-2016-mass-readings-reflections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2016\/10\/sunday-says-podcast-october-23-2016-mass-readings-reflections\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Says Podcast &#8211; October 23, 2016 Mass Readings and Reflections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SundaySaysPodcast-logo.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-41486\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SundaySaysPodcast-logo-300x231.jpg?resize=247%2C190\" alt=\"SundaySaysPodcast-logo\" width=\"247\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.universalis.com\/20161023\/mass.htm\">Sunday October 23, 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lectionary: 150 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/102316.cfm\"><b>NAB Translation<\/b><\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><b>Reading 1<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/sirach\/35:12\"><b>Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s first reading is on from the book of the Book of Sirach (also known as Ecclesiasticus), part of the great wisdom literature in the Old Testament.\u00a0 This book was written approximately 180 years before Christ during a time society was very polarized with Jew against Gentile and rich against the poor.\u00a0 Sirach wanted to teach his readers to avoid hypocrisy (so rampant in the Temple area) where many rich and powerful people made a spectacle of their worship while at the same time living lives that neglected and even oppressed the poor.\u00a0 The key to overcoming this hypocrisy was honesty and humility.\u00a0 External acts of piety are not an adequate substitute for true justice and true worship could only come from a humble heart that genuinely sought the Lord.<\/p>\n<p><b>Responsorial Psalm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/98:1\"><b>Psalm 34:2-3,17-19,23<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The response for this Psalm is from our Gospel:\u00a0 &#8220;The Lord hears the cry of the poor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Reading 2<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/2timothy\/4:6\"><b>2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this week\u2019s second reading (from his second letter to Timothy) Saint Paul, having had recent difficulties with false teachers, realizes that his days on earth are now numbered.\u00a0 He is eager to have Timothy carry on the work that he himself was doing and wants to be sure that Timothy&#8217;s faith does not waver and that the Gospel is not corrupted.\u00a0 Saint Paul is just about ready to accept martyrdom and uses athletic imagery to describe his perseverance, noting that he has &#8220;fought the good fight&#8221; and has finished the &#8220;race&#8221; and kept the faith unpolluted.\u00a0 Saint Paul&#8217;s desire is that Timothy and all Christians follow his example and be rewarded with the Crown of Righteousness on judgment day.<\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/18:9\"><b>Luke 18:9-14<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this week\u2019s Gospel from St. Luke, we see Jesus make very clear that humility is the only acceptable attitude to have toward God.\u00a0 Jesus contrasts two men, a Pharisee and a tax collector.\u00a0\u00a0 The Pharisees had a reputation for seeking righteousness.\u00a0 Too often, however, their pride allowed their piety to became an externalized form of self-righteousness.\u00a0\u00a0 By contrast, the tax collector, known for being a notorious sinner recognizes his dependence on God&#8217;s mercy and begs God for forgiveness.\u00a0 Jesus says that this man&#8217;s humility has put him in the right relationship with God while the Pharisee&#8217;s attitude cannot win forgiveness because he lacks the right attitude toward God.\u00a0 This is Jesus&#8217; warning to any of us who might yield to the temptation to think we win God&#8217;s favor by &#8220;doing things,&#8221; while neglecting the humility and contrition necessary for the true conversion that wins forgiveness.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Reflection question from Bishop V\u00e1squez<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel meditation<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Righteousness is the state of being in right relationship with God \u2013 being in a state of grace. Justification restores the fractured relationship with God. The Pharisee in today\u2019s Gospel does all the right things: he fasts, tithes, is honest, and is not greedy. As important as actions are, he wrongly believes his actions justify him before God. The tax collector, on the other hand, knows he has fallen short and is entirely dependent upon God\u2019s mercy. He gives us the Jesus Prayer: \u201cLord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.\u201d The tax collector went home in a state of grace because he humbled himself before God. What is the motivation behind our actions? Is it humble service to God?
