{"id":293915,"date":"2016-09-10T12:08:57","date_gmt":"2016-09-10T17:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/?p=293915"},"modified":"2016-09-10T15:31:33","modified_gmt":"2016-09-10T20:31:33","slug":"wedding-garment-matt-2211","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2016\/09\/wedding-garment-matt-2211\/","title":{"rendered":"A Wedding Garment (Matt. 22:11)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-293919\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/AWeddingGarment-550x275.jpg?resize=550%2C275\" alt=\"A Wedding Garment\" width=\"550\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Gospel of Matthew, we read about a guest who is not wearing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ca wedding garment,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (22:11) and how the guest is bound hand and foot and expelled from the ceremony. \u00a0What is this all about? \u00a0This parable points to the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and holy orders and much more. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We receive our wedding garment when we are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;baptized into Christ [and] clothed with Christ,&#8221; (<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gal. 3:27) or as the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving become a child of God clothed with the wedding garment.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1244)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One may ask how God clothes us with Christ, and Pope Benedict XVI explains, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe gives us His garments and these are not something external. It means that we enter into an existential communion with Him, that His being and our being merge, penetrate one another. \u2018It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me\u2019 (Gal.2:20). Christ has put on our clothes: the pain and joy of being a man, hunger, thirst, weariness, our hopes and disappointments, our fear of death, all our apprehensions until death. And He has given to us His \u2018garments\u2019. \u00a0Baptism an \u2018exchange of clothing\u2019 is given, an exchanged destination, a new existential communion with Christ.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2007 Chrism Mass)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_293916\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-293916\" class=\"size-large wp-image-293916\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/The-Wedding-Garment-550x379.jpg?resize=550%2C379\" alt=\"Wedding Garment - Artist Undetermined\" width=\"550\" height=\"379\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-293916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wedding Garment &#8211; Artist Undetermined<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God, like any good father or mother, further clothes us with a second tunic as the catechism explains<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;Confirmation is &#8230;clothing him with power from on high so that he may be a witness.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1304) \u00a0Also, referred to as a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;clothing with light, [and] a cloak of salvation.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCC 1297) The prophet Isaiah mentions these double garments, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe has clothed me with the robe of salvation, and wrapped me in the mantle of justice, like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[61:10] \u00a0\u00a0All this occurs that we may be, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cadmitted into to the marriage supper of the Lamb.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCC 1244) \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, in the Sacrament of Holy Orders, God clothes some with a third garment. \u00a0The Basic Norms for the Formation of Deacons states that the deacon is, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;invested with a sacred power&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1) so as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;to serve as a vested minister in the sanctification of the Christian community.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (28) \u00a0In other words the vestments worn at mass outwardly express the new inner condition of the soul being further clothed and configured to Christ, or as Pope Benedict XVI explains, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Interpreting the liturgical vestments themselves, which are precisely intended to illustrate what \u2018putting on Christ,\u2019 (Rom. 13:14)&#8230;mean[s],&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2007 Chrism Mass) while in the Spirit of the Liturgy he states, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Liturgical vestments are a direct reminder&#8230;of being clothed with Christ.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In essence in our souls, we have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;put on the armor of light,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rom. 13:12) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;a bright, clean linen garment,&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Rev. 19:8) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the finest robe&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Lk.15:22) for the King&#8217;s wedding. \u00a0At the level of grace, we have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;a coat of many colors,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Gen. 37:3) to be able to love and serve the poor, the rich, the sick, the imprisoned, the orphan, the widow, and the foreigner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-293917\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/robes-550x309.jpg?resize=550%2C309\" alt=\"robes\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, our wedding garments get stained with sin, but He has left us confession where we, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201chave washed [our] robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Rev 7:14) \u00a0Jesus explains this miracle to St. Faustina, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you go to confession\u2026the Blood and Water which came forth from My Heart always flows down upon your soul, [cleanses it], and ennobles it.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[1602] \u00a0\u00a0Moreover, at mass we receive His Blood that we may wear, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ca cloak that has been dipped in Blood.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Rev 19:13) so as to, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cconquer [the devil] by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of [our] testimony.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rev 12:11)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_293918\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-293918\" class=\"size-large wp-image-293918\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/parableoftheweddinggarment-550x372.jpg?resize=550%2C372\" alt=\"Parable of the Wedding Garment\" width=\"550\" height=\"372\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-293918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parable of the Wedding Garment<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, concerning the guest who was not wearing the proper wedding garments, St. Gregory the Great explains, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;But what kind of clothes ought he to have been wearing? All those who are gathered in the Church have received the new garment of baptism and the faith; otherwise, they would not be in the Church. So what was it that was still lacking? What wedding clothes must there be in addition?&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St Gregory answers<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the clothes of love.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, it is not sufficient that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe perishable has been clothed with the imperishable,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the mortal has been clothed with immortality,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1 Cor.15:54) but one must also be, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clothed with double garments.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Prov. 31:21) These double garments are the love of God and neighbor which is what also makes us stunning and attractive, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cas a bride adorned for her husband,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rev. 21:2) or as St. Gregory explains, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In what condition do we want to come to the feast in Heaven, if we are not wearing wedding clothes &#8211;
