{"id":282611,"date":"2016-08-14T07:00:47","date_gmt":"2016-08-14T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/?p=282611"},"modified":"2017-01-20T15:33:20","modified_gmt":"2017-01-20T21:33:20","slug":"image-divine-mercy-soul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2016\/08\/image-divine-mercy-soul\/","title":{"rendered":"The Image of Divine Mercy In My Soul"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_282668\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-282668\" class=\"size-large wp-image-282668\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SaintFaustinaInPrayer-523x700.jpg?resize=523%2C700\" alt=\"Saint Faustina in Prayer\" width=\"523\" height=\"700\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-282668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saint Faustina in Prayer<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska when speaking of the image of Divine Mercy, Jesus tells her, <\/span><b>&#8220;My image already is in your soul.&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Diary 49) The image of God was present in man from the beginning when God said, <\/span><b>&#8220;Let us make man in our image, after our likeness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; (Gen. 1:26) and as the author relates, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In the divine image He created him.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Gen. 1:27) Furthermore, the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The divine image is present in every man.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1702) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Catechism explains that the divine image of God manifests itself in our souls, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230;he is most especially in God&#8217;s image: [in the] &#8220;soul&#8221; [which] signifies the spiritual principle in man.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(363) and furthermore, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The human body shares in the dignity of &#8220;the image of God&#8221;: [as] it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul,&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (364) Similarly, St Faustina writes at the beginning of her diary, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;May praise and glory for this Image never cease to stream from man&#8217;s soul.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1) \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_282664\" style=\"width: 106px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-282664\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-282664\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Our-Lady-with-Divine-Mercy-Child-96x190.jpg?resize=96%2C190\" alt=\"Our Lady with Divine Mercy Child\" width=\"96\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-282664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our Lady with Divine Mercy Child<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ivine image of God is not just in the body and soul, but also in the person&#8217;s will, intellect, and freedom, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By virtue of his soul and his spiritual powers of intellect and will, man is endowed with freedom, an &#8216;outstanding manifestation of the divine image.'&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(CCC 1705)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vatican II document <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaudium Et Spes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also concurs, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For its part, authentic freedom is an exceptional sign of the divine image within man<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (17) Understanding that the divine image of God is present in each person, St. Faustina helps anyone who comes to the door, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I love all people because I see the image of God in them.&#8221;<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(Diary 373) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The divine image of God was distorted when Adam and Eve committed original sin. \u00a0In God&#8217;s mercy, the divine image of God in our souls has been repaired and healed to its full loveliness. \u00a0This occurred when Jesus died for us on the cross making us adopted sons and daughters of God. Or, as the Catechism explains<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;the divine image, disfigured in man by the first sin, has been restored to its original beauty and ennobled by the grace of God.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1701) \u00a0More specifically the divine image of God in each of us is restored at the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;sacrament of regeneration&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCC 1213) as the Rite of Baptism explains, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;May all who are buried with Christ in the death of baptism rise also with Him to newness of life.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rom 6:3-4; cf. Col 2:12)<\/span><\/p>\n<div>As baptism (CCC 1272), confirmation (CCC 1304), and holy orders (CCC 1582) imprints an indelible mark on the soul at specific times in our lives, so God\u00a0&#8220;stamped His image&#8221; (CCC 359)\u00a0\u00a0at our conception. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Hence, when Jesus says, <\/span><b>&#8220;My image already is in your soul.&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Diary 49) He is speaking of, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChrist the image of the invisible God\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Col 1:15) present in our souls. \u00a0The divine image of God in our souls entails the will, the intellect, freedom, but also the \u201creal\u201d image of divine mercy not painted, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;not made by hands,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Heb. 9:11) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;not built by human hands,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2Cor.5:1) and for this reason St. Faustina asks Our Lord in tears after seeing the painting made by human hands, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Who will paint You as beautiful as You are?&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Diary 313). \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_282666\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-282666\" class=\"size-large wp-image-282666\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SaintFaustinaIcon-500x700.jpg?resize=500%2C700\" alt=\"Icon of Divine Mercy and St Faustina\" width=\"500\" height=\"700\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-282666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Icon of Divine Mercy and St Faustina<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Faustina&#8217;s spiritual director Blessed Michael Sopocko discerns that the &#8220;real&#8221; image of Divine Mercy is in her soul, and says, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Certainly, paint God&#8217;s image in your soul.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Diary 49) \u00a0The future Pope Benedict XVI says something similar about painting the interior vision, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe sacredness of the image consists precisely in the fact that it comes from an interior vision and thus leads us to such an interior vision.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Spirit of the Liturgy) \u00a0In other words, St. Faustina has a new kind of seeing in which she perceives the mystery of the Invisible God become visible. \u00a0She is able to see the that we bear within us the image and message of the Resurrection through the &#8220;real&#8221; image of divine mercy. \u00a0The &#8220;real&#8221; image of divine mercy reminds us that, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith in Christ.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCC 638)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_282670\" style=\"width: 136px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-282670\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-282670\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/jesus-misericordioso-faustina-126x190.jpg?resize=126%2C190\" alt=\"Saint Faustina\" width=\"126\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-282670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saint Faustina<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, as mankind searches for love and identity through engraved tattoos, body piercings, and gender changes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Eph.1:18) that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;we are His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Eph.2:10) \u00a0The &#8220;real&#8221; image of divine mercy in our souls reminds us of our true dignity, and through it He lets us know that He loves us and claims us as His own as when a child is born with a precious family birth mark. \u00a0More importantly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The risen Christ lives in the hearts of his faithful,&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(CCC 655) so we are to always see His &#8220;real&#8221; image of divine mercy in everyone as St. Faustina writes,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;O God, give me a deeper faith that I may always see in every sister Your Holy Image which has been engraved in her soul.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Diary 1522) ST.
