{"id":270555,"date":"2016-07-23T07:00:35","date_gmt":"2016-07-23T12:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/?p=270555"},"modified":"2016-07-24T11:09:19","modified_gmt":"2016-07-24T16:09:19","slug":"gods-jn-1034","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2016\/07\/gods-jn-1034\/","title":{"rendered":"You are gods (Jn 10:34)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-272323\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/youaregods-550x329.jpg?resize=550%2C329\" alt=\"youaregods\" width=\"550\" height=\"329\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus says, <\/span><b>&#8220;You are gods.&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Jn. 10:34) How is this possible?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At baptism, we become <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partakers of the divine nature,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCC 1265 or 2Pt.1:4) or as St. Athanasius states that we are, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">becoming by grace what God is by nature.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Catechism quotes St. Athanasius to explain this teaching, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For the Son of God became man so that we might become God,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (460) and furthermore it explains, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that He, made man, might make men gods.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCC 460)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most of us, the concept that <\/span><b>&#8220;You are gods.&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Jn. 10:34) or that we are being &#8220;divinized&#8221; is difficult to grasp so let us first look at Jesus&#8217; baptism when the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus and the Heavenly Father says, <\/span><b>&#8220;This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Matt. 3:17) Likewise, the Holy Spirit also descends into our souls at baptism, and we, too, become His sons and daughters as the Psalmist states, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;You are &#8216;gods&#8217;; you are all sons of The Most High.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (82:6) \u00a0The Heavenly Father&#8217;s words also apply to us as when St. Faustina hears Him say, &#8220;<\/span><b>You are My delightful dwelling place; My Spirit rests in you.&#8221; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(Diary 346)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_272318\" style=\"width: 152px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-272318\" class=\"wp-image-272318 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/OurLadyHeart-142x190.png?resize=142%2C190\" alt=\"OurLadyHeart\" width=\"142\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-272318\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our Lady of the Divine Indwelling<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Paul reminds us that we are temples of God, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you?&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1Cor.6:19) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For this reason, those in whom the Spirit dwells are divinized.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCC 1988) Divinization also means that the Holy Spirit makes us, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;a new creature.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCC 1265) However, it is not just the Holy Spirit that dwells in our souls, but it is also the Holy Trinity. \u00a0\u00a0The Catechism explains that baptism is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;entry into the life of the Most Holy Trinity,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1239) and we become <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the indwelling of His Presence in us&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2781).<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_272317\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-272317\" class=\"wp-image-272317 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Trinity-150x150.png?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"Trinity\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-272317\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trinity<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John Paul II enlightens us that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8216;Divinization&#8217;&#8230;occurs through the admission into the intimacy of the Trinitarian life&#8221;,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Novo Millennio Ineunte no. 23) as when the Holy Trinity speaks in the soul of St. Faustina, &#8220;&#8216;<\/span><b>You are Our dwelling place.&#8217; <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that moment, I felt in my soul the presence of the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I felt that I was the temple of God. I felt I was a child of the Father,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she said. (Diary 451) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Faustina says, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Divinize me so that my deeds may have supernatural value,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1242) but she remains a meek and humble student of the indwelling Presence. She accepts to be molded regardless of her sins and frailties. \u00a0Jesus explains to St. Faustina what He can do despite our faults and failings, <\/span><b>&#8220;Your heart is My constant dwelling place, despite the misery that you are. \u00a0I united Myself with you, to take away your misery and give you My mercy.&#8221; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Diary 723) \u00a0She learns to worship the Holy Trinity within her soul so well that the Blessed Virgin Mary appears to her explaining the divinization going on in her soul, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;You are a dwelling place pleasing to the living God; in you, He dwells continuously with love and delight. And the living presence of God, which you experience in a more vivid and distinct way, will confirm you, my daughter, in the things I have told you.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Diary 785)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_231916\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-231916\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-231916\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Divine-Mercy-and-Faustina-215x190.jpg?resize=215%2C190\" alt=\"Divine Mercy and St Faustina\" width=\"215\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-231916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Divine Mercy and St Faustina<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Faustina continues to plead with God, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Divinize me that my deeds may be pleasing to You,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Diary 1289) so the Blessed Virgin Mary gives her instruction on how to live continually with the indwelling Presence, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;My daughter, strive after silence and humility, so that Jesus, who dwells in your heart continuously, may be able to rest. Adore Him in your heart; do not go out from your inmost being.<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My daughter, I shall obtain for you the grace of an interior life which will be such that, without ever leaving that interior life, you will be able to carry out all your external duties with even greater care. Dwell with Him continuously in your heart. He will be your strength. Communicate with creatures only in so far as is necessary<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and is required by your duties.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Diary 785)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Divinization is difficult to understand due to the way we view ourselves, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;we hold this treasure in earthen vessels,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2Cor.4:7) but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instrumentum Laboris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instructs us that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Eucharist is the summit of the Church\u2019s life, since communion with the Lord leads to the sanctification and \u201cdivinization\u201d of the person.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1) Similarly, to help St. Faustina comprehend, Jesus tells her that as she sees Him outside so He is within, <\/span><b>&#8220;I am dwelling in your heart as you see Me in this chalice.&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1820) \u00a0But, why is all this relevant or important to us now?
