{"id":1867,"date":"2011-05-31T13:00:56","date_gmt":"2011-05-31T18:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/?p=1867"},"modified":"2011-05-31T07:35:34","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T12:35:34","slug":"summer-movie-preview-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2011\/05\/summer-movie-preview-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Movie Preview 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I  used to be a movie buff. \u00a0As a kid and young adult, I would watch  almost anything. \u00a0I knew my fascination with film had probably become an  obsession when, after one particularly active movie-viewing summer, I  received a letter from the president of Blockbuster Video, thanking me  for renting more movies than 99% of other customers and awarding me with  a Blockbuster Rewards Gold card. \u00a0The card allowed me to have \u201crent  one, get one\u201d privileges for life. \u00a0The irony of this all, of course, is  that I (hopefully) will long outlive Blockbuster video.<\/p>\n<p>These days, as a father of three wonderful kids, we don&#8217;t make it to the movies much.\u00a0 At some point during the summer, however, the wife and I will decide to pay too  much for the honor of watching stuff blow up while eating stale popcorn.\u00a0 More than likely, you&#8217;ll find yourself in the same boat.\u00a0 So, let&#8217;s take a look and see what we&#8217;ll be watching.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s Already Out<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Hangover, Part II <\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s  just like The Hangover, but in Bangkok. \u00a0Did anything good ever come  out of a film being set in Bangkok? \u00a0Especially a film that will almost  certainly hinge on raunchy sexuality. \u00a0In case you\u2019re unfamiliar with  the concept: Three guys party hard, wake up and have to piece together  the night before while getting into hilarious hijinks. \u00a0Even though I,  admittedly, enjoyed The Hangover, I think I\u2019ll skip this one.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RYL_T7f59o8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p><strong>Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides<\/strong><br \/>\nThe  first Pirates of the Carribean film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, was  light hearted, fun and entirely entertaining. \u00a0Then came the two bloated  sequels shot back to back with a story few people understood and even  fewer cared about. \u00a0PotC: OST, as I\u2019m calling it for short, is the  franchise\u2019s opportunity to redeem itself and get back to it\u2019s jolly,  swashbuckling roots. \u00a0Early reviews called it better, but still a missed  opportunity. \u00a0Walk the plank at your own risk.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QQ_1ZZSNFuQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<h3><strong>Super Hero Sightings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>X-Men: First Class<\/strong><br \/>\nX-Men  and X2 were great movies directed by the incredibly talented Bryan  Singer. Then came the 2006 Brett Ratner-directed X-Men: The Last Stand  and the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which, to put it nicely,  underwhelmed. \u00a0X-Men: First Class attempts to return the origins of the  original X-Men trilogy, providing back story for Professor Xavier and  Magneto\u2019s decades-long altercation. Here\u2019s hoping that this film can  put the X-Men franchise back on track. \u00a0Release date: June 3.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/frcCCHb9LHc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>The Green Lantern<\/strong><br \/>\nI  have to make two things abundantly clear. \u00a0First, I never got in to the  The Green Lantern comics as a kid and, second, I really want to like  any film that features Ryan Reynolds. \u00a0However, I believe those two  caveats are cancelling each other out as I look forward to The Green  Lantern with a resounding, \u201cmeh, [shoulder shrug].\u201d \u00a0Maybe I\u2019m getting  too old but, as Marvel Films rolls out another series of films featuring  their most popular characters, I have yet to see anything that makes me  want to enter the universe of The Green Lantern. \u00a0Release date: June  17.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8NWGl_A3b60?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p><strong>Transformers: Dark of the Moon<\/strong><br \/>\nMore  Shia LeBeouf and fighting robots. \u00a0Personally, I\u2019m hoping that director  Michael Bay scales back from the action of Transformers 2 to, you know,  actually tell a story with this one. \u00a0Still, this ain\u2019t Shakespeare,  but I\u2019d love to see a film that lives up to the good time that was the  first in this line of Transformer films. \u00a0Release Date: July 1.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kHRf01Gjosk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p><strong>Captain America: The First Avenger<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother  Marvel comic book comes to the big screen, but this story looks much  more compelling than the aforementioned Green Lantern.\u00a0 Release date: July 22.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-J3HfllvXWE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Super&#8230;Awesome<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Super 8<\/strong><br \/>\nJ.J.  Abrams follows up his previous directing gigs, Star Trek and Mission  Impossible: III to make an original film about aliens&#8230; I think. \u00a0It  doesn\u2019t really matter what it\u2019s about. \u00a0They had at \u201cDirected by J.J.  Abrams.\u201d\u00a0 Release date: June 10.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vpzUCA5i6zY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p><strong>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2<\/strong><br \/>\nIf  you\u2019re not a Harry Potter fan, this isn\u2019t the time to start. \u00a0Harry,  Ron and Hermoine continue their search for the last (five?) of  Voldemort\u2019s horcruxes. \u00a0That might have been the nerdiest sentence I  ever wrote. \u00a0Who cares, I can\u2019t wait for this one. \u00a0Release date: July  15.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I_kDb-pRCds?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p><strong>Cowboys and Aliens<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019m  not sure if I ever knew that I wanted to see a movie combining alien  invasion and a western, until I saw the preview for this film starring  James Bond (a.k.a. Daniel Craig) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford). \u00a0Plus,  this is directed by Ironman\u2019s Jon Favereu. \u00a0Release Date: July 29.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YNaIEUzwRWY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<h3><strong>Kids Stuff (Or&#8230;the only movies I&#8217;ll probably end up seeing this summer)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cars 2<\/strong><br \/>\nSince  first launching in to feature films with Toy Story, Pixar has done  almost nothing wrong. \u00a0That is, unless you count the film Cars.  \u00a0Essentially, it was Doc Hollywood (a Michael J.
