{"id":1591332,"date":"2019-03-12T11:40:33","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T16:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/?p=1591332"},"modified":"2019-03-12T12:59:53","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:59:53","slug":"the-crowning-of-st-joseph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2019\/03\/the-crowning-of-st-joseph\/","title":{"rendered":"The Crowning of St. Joseph!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong>\u201cThus should he be honored whom the King desires to honor!\u201d<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"392\" width=\"550\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/image4-550x392.jpg?resize=550%2C392\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591334\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary<\/em> is on Tuesday, March 19, 2019.&nbsp; This year is also the 61<sup>st<\/sup> anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewtn.com\/library\/BISHOPS\/burkeolamer.htm\">church approved apparitions<\/a> of St. Joseph in America in which Sr. Mary Ephrem (1916-2000) saw him being crowned by angels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cI was favored with a unique and marvelous vision of the glorious St. Joseph&#8230;His appearance, though quite youthful&#8230;seemed a bit taller than medium height\u2026. I also saw his most pure heart at this time. Moreover, I saw the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove hovering above his head. <strong>Standing sideways, facing each other, were two angels, one on the right, the other on the left. Each carried what appeared to be a small pillow in a satin covering, the pillow on the right bearing a gold crown, the one on the left, a gold scepter.<\/strong> The angels were all white, even their faces and hair. It was a beautiful whiteness that reminded me of the stainlessness of heaven. Then I heard these words: <strong>\u2018Thus should he be honored whom the King desires to honor.<\/strong>\u2019\u201d (March 19, 1958)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"190\" width=\"154\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/image13-154x190.jpg?resize=154%2C190\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591422\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, the great Pharaoh\ncrowned the Old Testament Joseph with a signet ring, jewelry, and special\ngarments because he was the wisest man in all the world for saving the world\nfrom famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThen Pharaoh removed the signet ring from his finger, put it on Joseph\u2019s finger, clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed a gold chain around his neck.<\/em> <em>He had Joseph ride in his second chariot, with men calling out before him, \u2018Bow the knee!\u2019&nbsp; So he placed him over all the land of Egypt.\u201d (Gen.41:42-43)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"190\" width=\"122\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/image8-122x190.jpg?resize=122%2C190\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591340\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, we crown and honor the\nNew Testament Joseph, for his kingly Davidic lineage (Mt.1:1-16) as St. Peter\nJulian Eymard remind us, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cTherefore, since Christ was King, of the line of David, He made Saint Joseph to be born of this same royal line. He wanted him to be noble, of earthly nobility. In the veins of St. Joseph, therefore, flows the blood of David and Solomon, and of all the noble kings of Judah. If his dynasty still sat on the throne, St. Joseph would be the heir and would have sat on the throne in his turn.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A king in his own right and the\nspouse of <em>the<\/em> Queen of Heaven. He is the\nprotector of families, intercessor of purity, but most especially the <em>Patron and Protector of the Universal Church<\/em>\na title issued by Pope Pius IX when the church was facing troubled times.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"700\" width=\"528\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/image12-528x700.jpg?resize=528%2C700\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591336\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The earliest known unofficial St. Joseph statue crownings occurred in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia in 1779, Mexico City in 1788, and Guanajuato, Mexico in 1790 according to <a href=\"http:\/\/osjusa.org\/st-joseph\/liturgy\/part-b-other-official-recognition-of-devotions\/\">Oblates of St. Joseph website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"190\" width=\"105\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/image15-105x190.jpg?resize=105%2C190\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591337\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially, popes have approved a\ntotal of eighteen pontifical crownings of a St. Joseph statue throughout the\nworld.&nbsp;&nbsp; The first official crowning of a\nSt. Joseph statue was approved by Pope Pius VI on May 15, 1796 for the Sanctuary\nof Saint Joseph, Kalisz, Poland and the last crowning was on August 24, 1963 by\nPope St. Paul VI at the Convent of St. Joseph in Spain.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pope Pius X, Pope Benedict XV,\nand Pope St. John XXIII each crowned St. Joseph twice while Pope Pius IX and\nPope Pius XII issued three crowning\u2019s of a St. Joseph statue. Pope Leo XIII\ncrowned St. Joseph four times including one in the United States on September\n25, 1891 at the National Shrine of Saint Joseph, De Pere, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on papal <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_canonically_crowned_images#Canonically_crowned_Josephian_images\">crownings of a St. Joseph statue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"367\" width=\"550\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/image6-550x367.jpg?resize=550%2C367\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591335\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At Saint Mary Cathedral in\nAustin, Texas, St. Joseph and the Infant Jesus statue have been crowned for\nmany years during the mass.&nbsp; Each year\ntwo young boys are chosen to process with crowns from the back of the church as\nmusic is played.&nbsp; When the boys reach the\nsteps of the sanctuary, the music stops and the priest blesses the crowns of St.\nJoseph and the Infant Jesus.&nbsp; The music begins\nagain and the boys proceed to crown the statues, and then the mass resumes as\nnormal.&nbsp; This crowning is very similar to\nthe crowning done for a statue or image of Our Lady which is found in the <em>Order of Crowning an Image of the Blessed\nVirgin Mary <\/em>issued in 1987 by Pope St. John Paul II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"367\" width=\"550\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/image7-550x367.jpg?resize=550%2C367\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591338\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After\nmass there is a great celebration (yes, in the middle of Lent since it is a\nsolemnity and even the clergy vestments are white instead of violet) of the St.\nJoseph\u2019s table at the Bishop\u2019s Hall where people bring all sorts of goodies to\nsavor the palate and break the fast refreshing the soul in these most\nchallenging times!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"190\" width=\"143\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/atxcatholic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/image9-143x190.jpg?resize=143%2C190\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591339\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally,\nlike St. Joseph in the vision of Sr. Mary Ephrem, we too, are called this Lent\nto strive to attain holiness as Paul, John, and Peter challenge us to go after <strong>\u201cthe Incorruptible Crown,\u201d<\/strong> (1 Cor.9:25),\n<strong>\u201cthe Crown of Rejoicing,\u201d <\/strong>(1Thes.2:19),\n<strong>\u201cthe Crown of Life,\u201d<\/strong> (Rev. 2:10) <strong>\u201cthe Crown of Righteousness,\u201d<\/strong> (2 Tim.4:8)\nand <strong>\u201cthe Crown of Glory!\u201d<\/strong> (1Pt. 5:4)\nST.
