I\u2019ve been blessed with almost a decade of working in youth ministry and witnessing the incredible ways that the Lord can work in the lives of high school teens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many lives I have seen touched by God, we have a serious problem in the Church. In the USA alone, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% of youth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that go through our Catholic programs are no longer practicing Catholics by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2009\/04\/27\/faith-in-flux3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">age of 23<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a terrifying statistic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2009\/04\/27\/faith-in-flux3\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-153145\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ReligiousEducation.gif?resize=548%2C178\" alt=\"ReligiousEducation\" width=\"548\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source of this issue is complex and has existed for a few generations now, and I have heard a lot of people that don\u2019t work in youth ministry share their opinion. There\u2019s lots of great <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2015\/01\/how-my-parish-youth-group-helped-me-leave-the-catholic-faith\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">points to consider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when reviewing youth ministry. With the risk of over-simplifying <a href=\"http:\/\/taylormarshall.com\/2013\/09\/80-catholic-youth-leave-the-church.html\" target=\"_blank\">a\u00a0solution<\/a>, here are some points I have learned over the past few years. Many came after painful failures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>7 Lessons I have Learned Serving in Youth Ministry<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bar must be set higher than getting teens to attend and at least seem like they\u2019re paying attention. Our mission can\u2019t be less than making disciples (Matthew 28:19)<\/span><\/span>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_153142\" style=\"width: 177px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-153142\" class=\"wp-image-153142 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cat-cert-pic-167x190.png?resize=167%2C190\" alt=\"Catechist\" width=\"167\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-153142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catechist<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catechesis will not be effective on un-evangelized teens. Teens must know the love of Christ to truly have faith or even care about what the Church has to say.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Programs often underestimate the capacity and desire of teens for the fullness of Truth from Mother Church. Young people go after sin because they are seeking His Truth and love but don\u2019t know how to fill the void.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The how\u2019s and why\u2019s of the faith cannot be skipped or understated. You can\u2019t teach them everything, but you can teach them how to think and find the Truth in Him.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cModern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.\u201d &#8211; Pope Paul VI<\/span><\/span>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_153143\" style=\"width: 126px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-153143\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-153143\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/CatechismOfTheCatholicChurch-116x190.jpg?resize=116%2C190\" alt=\"CatechismOftheCatholicChurch\" width=\"116\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-153143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CCC<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no use in avoiding or ignoring the difficult topics. Teens have questions, and we need to answer them with Truth instead of the lies of the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have to speak of the person of Jesus as much as the teachings of the Church. Teaching teens how to pray and walk with God is the most important task of a catechist.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stakes are high and real lives are involved, but one of the most liberating truths of serving in youth ministry is that it\u2019s not all up to us. Only God\u2019s grace is capable of converting hearts and He will always generously provide what we need to do His work. If you have been on the fence about serving in your parish youth ministry, consider it again.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.\u201d &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Luke 10:2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Interview with Students of Youth Ministry<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the end of this summer, I sat down with some former students to discuss youth ministry as they exited and leave for the next chapter in their lives. I am going to try and schedule an interview more students in the future, but here is the first one.<\/p>\n<p>[powerpress]<\/p>\n<p>While I was sitting in adoration with students at a recent retreat, I was reminded about how much Jesus minister to me through them.
