{"id":145213,"date":"2015-09-02T07:30:07","date_gmt":"2015-09-02T12:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/?p=145213"},"modified":"2015-09-03T09:23:24","modified_gmt":"2015-09-03T14:23:24","slug":"angels-dragons-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2015\/09\/angels-dragons-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Angels &#038; Dragons II"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>What is a Dragon?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_145260\" style=\"width: 163px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145260\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-145260\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Destruction_of_Leviathan-153x190.png?resize=153%2C190\" alt=\"By Gustave Dor\u00e9\" width=\"153\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By Gustave Dor\u00e9<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hebrew word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ctanniyn\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is used to depict a mysterious and vile creature similar to a giant reptile. \u00a0\u00a0\u201cTanniyn\u201d is found 28 times in the Old Testament, with English translations sometimes referring to it as dragon, sea-monster, serpent, whale, or jackal. \u00a0In the New Testament the Book of Revelation uses the Greek word \u03b4\u03c1\u03b1\u0301\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd or drako\u0304n a total of 11 times meaning &#8220;large serpent.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book of Revelation identifies the dragon as, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The great dragon, that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (12:9 NAB) Similarly, the Rite of Exorcism states, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dragon, the ancient serpent, no other than the demon, Satan,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at times even calling him, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;reprobate dragon&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;profligate dragon.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What does a dragon look like?<\/strong><i> <\/i><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together; They are fitted so close to each other that no air can come between them; So joined to one another that they hold fast and cannot be parted. When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn. \u00a0Out of his mouth go forth torches; sparks of fire leap forth. From his nostrils comes smoke as from a seething pot or bowl.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His breath sets coals afire; a flame comes from his mouth. \u00a0Strength abides in his neck, and power leaps before him&#8230;His heart is cast as hard as stone&#8230;<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he rises up, the gods are afraid; when he crashes down, they fall back&#8230;<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon the earth there is none like him, he was made fearless. He looks over all who are haughty, he is king over all proud beasts.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Job 41:7-26 NAB)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How do you get rid of, <i>\u201cthe dragon and his angels,\u201d?<\/i> (Rev. 12:7 NAB) <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Exorcismo Magno&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was performed on the country of Mexico and also in the city of Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples, Italy because they had become a, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;habitation of dragons.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Is. 34:13 Douay-Rheims Bible)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145255\" style=\"width: 147px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145255\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-145255\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Fr.-Jose-Antonio-Fortea-137x190.jpg?resize=137%2C190\" alt=\"Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea\" width=\"137\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern day Spanish exorcist Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea, one of the most renown and successful exorcist of our times said this year, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If this ritual (Exorcismo Magno) were to be carried out in more countries once year,&#8230;there will certainly be positive repercussions, because it will make a great number of the tempters flee, even if this exorcism is partial.&#8221; \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly in ages past, St. Francis of Assisi via prayer and one of his religious brothers exorcised the city of Arezzo in Italy, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe dragon and his angels,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rev. 12:7 NAB) left the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How do we invite, <i>\u201cthe dragon and his angels,\u201d?<\/i> (Rev. 12:7 NAB)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the people become, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the brother of dragons,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Job 30:29 Douay-Rheims Bible) through sins that fly in the face of God and make idols like, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the dragon fountain,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Nehemiah 2:13 Douay-Rheims Bible) then their land becomes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;a dwelling for dragons.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Jer.10:22 Douay-Rheims Bible) They give their spiritual <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;inheritance to the dragons&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Malachi 1:3 Douay-Rheims Bible) and drink, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the gall of dragons.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Deuteronomy 32:33 Douay-Rheims Bible) \u00a0Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea states, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;To the extent sin increases more and more in a country, to that extent it becomes easier for the demons to tempt (people).&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, Fr. Gabriel Amorth, the Vatican&#8217;s chief exorcists (retired) states in 1992, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In some areas where paganism is prevalent we find an unleashing of demons&#8230; I researched this phenomenon in some areas of Africa&#8230; in some areas of old Catholic Europe (such as Italy, France, Spain, Austria) because there is a frightening drop in faith among the nations.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Countries are quickly becoming, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a dwelling place for dragons.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (Jer. 51:37 Douay-Rheims Bible) bringing to mind the two times in the Book of Revelation when the dragon is released, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Dragon has come down to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rev. 12:12 NAB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;He (the angel) seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, which is the Devil or Satan, and tied it up for a thousand years&#8230;After this, it is to be released for a short time.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Rev. 20:2-3 NAB) \u00a0This also brings to mind the prophecy from the approved apparition of Our Lady of La Salette, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucifer, together with a great number of devils, will be loosed from hell.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed to combat the invasion of, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe dragon and his angels,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rev. 12:7 NAB) we must <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Proclaim a War!\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Joel 4:9 NAB) like the ancient dragon slayers! \u00a0So who were the ancient dragon-slayers? \u00a0And what were their weapons of war? \u00a0For we are not the first dragon-slayers, and we must learn the weapons of choice from those who have gone before us in order to successfully defeat man&#8217;s most ancient foes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe dragon and his angels,\u201d.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rev. 12:7 NAB) \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sign of the Cross<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_145223\" style=\"width: 152px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145223\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-145223\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/StColumba-Monster-142x190.jpeg?resize=142%2C190\" alt=\"St Columba Commands the Monster\" width=\"142\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Columba Commands the Monster<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the weapons for warding off the dragon is faith in the Sign of the Cross for it is the sign of our salvation where Jesus died and shed his blood on the cross. (Col. 1:20 NAB<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0St. Columba is a great example of the power of the Sign of the Cross. \u00a0\u00a0He once protected a man from being swallowed up by a dragon.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Adaman jots down in 565 AD,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThe dragon suddenly rushed out and giving an awful roar, darted after him (the man) with its mouth wide open, as the man swam in the middle of the stream.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Columba raised his hand, made the Sign of the Cross and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201ccommanded the ferocious monster saying, \u2018Thou shalt go no further, nor touch the man; go back with all speed.\u2019 Then at the voice of<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the saint, the monster was terrified, and fled more quickly than if it had been pulled back with ropes.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yes, scripture has, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dragons in the waters.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (Psalm 74:13 Douay-Rheims Bible)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145257\" style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145257\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-145257\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/saint-clement-and-the-graoully-248x190.jpg?resize=248%2C190\" alt=\"St Clement and the Graoully\" width=\"248\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145257\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Clement and the Graoully<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Similarly in the 1st Century, St. Clement was sent to Metz to preach the gospel to a people held captive by a dragon. \u00a0Entering the amphitheater with much prayer and his stole, St. Clement made the Sign of the Cross and the dragon was subdued. \u00a0He led the dragon out of the town telling him to disappear into a place where there were no humans or animals, and the dragon obeyed while everyone but the king was converted.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145217\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145217\" class=\"size-large wp-image-145217\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/StMarthaDragon-550x359.jpg?resize=550%2C359\" alt=\"St Martha and the Dragon\" width=\"550\" height=\"359\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Martha and the Dragon<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Holy Water<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another powerful weapon of dragon slayers is holy water. \u00a0St. Martha, the sister of Lazarus, heard there was a dragon in a swamp between Arles and Avignon, France that was destroying property and killing everyone with its fiery breath. This dragon brings to mind the scripture, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Thou great dragon that liest in the midst of thy rivers, and sayest: The river is mine, and I made myself.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ezekiel 29:3 Douay-Rheims Bible)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Martha with no other weapon than a jar of holy water went in search of the dragon. \u00a0The dragon came out to devour her, but it was arrested solely by the power of the cross and the holy water the saint was carrying. As she prayed and sang hymns St. Martha bound the dragon with her belt and led the beast to the town of Tarascon, where it was killed by its citizens. \u00a0St. Martha then preached to the people and converted many of them to Christianity. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Crucifix<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_145216\" style=\"width: 132px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145216\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-145216\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/StMargretofAntioch-Dragon-122x190.jpg?resize=122%2C190\" alt=\"St Margret of Antioch - Raphael\" width=\"122\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Margret of Antioch &#8211; Raphael<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another very important weapon of dragon slayers is the crucifix. \u00a0St. Margaret of Antioch in 304 A.D. in doing battle was swallowed by Satan in the shape of a dragon, from which she escaped alive when the cross she carried irritated the dragon&#8217;s entrails causing him to expel her reminding us of the scripture, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;He hath swallowed me up like a dragon.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Jer.51:34 Douay-Rheims Bible)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, and hers was one of the voices heard by St. Joan of Arc. Similarly in the 7th Century, St. Romanus of Rouen (Archbishop and Apostle of Normandy) stopped a huge dragon with his crucifix and then bound the dragon with his stole where he took him in procession to town where the dragon was burned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, St. Philip, the apostle, drove away a dragon in the Temple of Mars in Scythia with a cross. \u00a0Saint Philip commanded the dragon to go into the desert without doing any harm to the people. \u00a0After the dragon departed, Saint Philip preached and healed all the people who were sick, and he then raised three that were dead. He also baptized all who were in the temple. \u00a0This banishment of dragons into the desert was done by some exorcists in the past reminding us of the scripture, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the dragons of the desert.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0(Malachi 1:3 Douay-Rheims Bible) and when Jesus was tempted in the desert by the dragon. \u00a0Although today the majority of exorcists send <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe dragon and his angels,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rev. 12:7 NAB) to the foot of the cross so that Jesus can send them to their rightful place. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145214\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145214\" class=\"size-large wp-image-145214\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Filippino_Lippi_-_St_Philip_Driving_the_Dragon_from_the_Temple_of_Hieropolis_-_WGA13146-550x560.jpg?resize=550%2C560\" alt=\"St Philip Driving the Dragon from the Templte of Hieropolis - Filippino Lippi\" width=\"550\" height=\"560\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Philip Driving the Dragon from the Templte of Hieropolis &#8211; Filippino Lippi<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a blessed item is another powerful weapon that dragons slayers use. \u00a0The battle between St. Radegund (520-587) and the dragon of Poitiers, France is a great tribute to female dragon slayers. The dragon would use underground cave tunnels during floods to come devour the nuns of the Abbey of the Holy Cross reminding us of scripture<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that refers to the,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;dens of dragons.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Jer. 9:11 Douay-Rheims Bible)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With much prayer and faith, Saint Radegund faced the dragon with blessed bread and a small cross as weapons. When the dragon attacked she threw the blessed bread into his mouth and prayed while the dragon convulsed in horrible pains and then, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">snuffed up the wind like dragons<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; (Jer.14:6 Douay-Rheims Bible) do when they are dying.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Incense<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another great weapon of dragon slayers is blessed incense. \u00a0St. Raphael the Archangel instructs Tobiah on how to use incense to rid the dragon that had killed the previous seven grooms of his bride. When Tobiah put incense on the embers, the odor, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;repulsed the demon, and it fled to the upper regions of Egypt; Raphael went in pursuit of it and there bound it hand and foot.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Tobit 8:3 NAB) \u00a0Fr. Gabriel Amorth is also in agreement, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Demons cannot stand the smell of incense; therefore it is beneficial to use it.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dragon Slayers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intercession of dragon slayers like St. George is also a powerful weapon for defeating dragons. \u00a0Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea (mentioned above) invokes the ancient dragon slayer St. George during exorcisms saying, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Come St. George, Come St. George&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the possessed convulses at hearing the name of St. George. \u00a0When St. George arrives, Fr. Fortea asks St. George to make the possessed kneel so that she can receive Holy Communion and the demon obeys St. George but not without the it complaining, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Assassin leave me!&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The protesting reminds us of the scripture, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I will make a wailing like the dragons.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Micah 1:8 Douay-Rheims Bible) \u00a0Fr. Fortea relates<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;Of all of the saints and angels, the name of St. George is the most effective for this demon.&#8221; \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145221\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145221\" class=\"size-large wp-image-145221\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/peter-paul-rubens-saint-george-and-the-dragon-550x671.jpg?resize=550%2C671\" alt=\"St. George and the Dragon - Rubens\" width=\"550\" height=\"671\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. George and the Dragon &#8211; Rubens<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the most ancient intercessor of all dragon slayers is St. Michael the Archangel. \u00a0St. Michael is the first to ever defeat the dragon, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rev.12:7-8 NAB) <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145261\" style=\"width: 133px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145261\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-145261\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/StMichaelandtheDragon-123x190.jpg?resize=123%2C190\" alt=\"St Michael by Raphael Sadeler II \" width=\"123\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145261\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Michael &#8211;\u00a0Raphael Sadeler II<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is the commander of the armies in heaven and on earth. \u00a0He is the chief dragon slayer! \u00a0Fr.
