Via the Diocese of Austin Facebook page.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yesterday, Bishop Joe V\u00e1squez lead the\u00a0Diocese\u00a0of Austin in this year&#8217;s Chrism Mass\u00a0at St. William Catholic Church in Round Rock. The church was filled to its\u00a01,700 person capacity for this once-a-year liturgy, including approximately 500 catholic school students.<\/p>\n<p>For the past few weeks I&#8217;ve been surprised by how many practicing\u00a0Catholics are unaware of this jewel of a liturgy. The Chrism Mass is celebrated\u00a0on the Tuesday during Holy Week in this diocese, and its significance is twofold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is\u00a0the mass in which the Bishop blesses the holy oils to be be used by\u00a0the whole diocese for the year, and<\/li>\n<li>it is the mass in which all the\u00a0priests of the diocese gather and renew their vows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14366\" style=\"width: 464px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/diocese-of-austin-chrism-mass-2012\/chrism-mass-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14366\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14366\" class=\" wp-image-14366  \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/chrism-mass-2-630x420.jpg?resize=454%2C302\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Priests renew their priestly promises. Via the Diocese of Austin Facebook page.<\/p><\/div>\n<div>It is a sight to be seen, with all the smells and bells you would\u00a0expect from a mass of this significance.\u00a0The choir and orchestra were also incredible, as men and women from\u00a0all over the diocese gathered to bring us closer to Christ through song. After the Liturgy of the Word, the Bishop Joe lead all the priests in renewing their priestly promises. Then he lead all those gathered in prayer for the priests, and for himself.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Afterwards, each of the oils is processed up to the altar where the Bishop pours them and blesses them.<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><strong>The Oil of the Sick<\/strong>\u00a0is used by the priest during the sacrament of the Anointing\u00a0of the Sick to bring comfort and at times physical healing to those in need.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>The Oil of the Catechumens<\/strong>\u00a0is used during the Rite of Infant Baptism and to bless adult catechumens during the time of study and preparation for Baptism at the Easter Vigil.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>The Sacred Chrism<\/strong>\u00a0is used to\u00a0anoint\u00a0the newly baptized, to seal the candidates for Confirmation, to anoint the hands of priests at their ordination and to consecrate an altar or a new church.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>The Perfumed Balsam<\/strong>\u00a0is mixed with the selected oil to make the Sacred Chrism.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: right\"><em>-Rite of Blessing, Chrism Mass Worship Aid<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_14368\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/diocese-of-austin-chrism-mass-2012\/chrism-mass\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14368\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14368\" class=\" wp-image-14368 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/chrism-mass-630x430.jpg?resize=504%2C344\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All the priests, with their hands outstretched, pray the blessing for the Sacred Chrism. Via the Diocese of Austin Facebook page.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the large diocesan-wide audience, Bishop Joe Vasquez didn&#8217;t shy\u00a0away from the big topics the church is facing as it enters into the\u00a0Easter season. In his homily he emphasized the significance of\u00a0Christ&#8217;s sacrifice on the cross, and also again voiced the need for all\u00a0Catholics to stand up against the HHS mandate that encroaches on our\u00a0First Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p>The Liturgy of the Eucharist was immense, as every priest in attendance processed\u00a0up and stood behind the altar, and prayed and sang in unison with Bishop Joe. This is the first Chrism Mass since the new translation, so\u00a0hearing the new words for the first time in this grand context was a holy\u00a0sight.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14367\" style=\"width: 464px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/diocese-of-austin-chrism-mass-2012\/chrism-mass-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14367\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14367\" class=\" wp-image-14367  \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/chrism-mass-3-630x360.jpg?resize=454%2C259\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Great Amen. After mass was a reception hosted by the Saint William staff, and each individual priest or representative was invited to collect the oils for their parishes.<\/p>\n<p>This one mass, once a year, reaches out to so many across our diocese. It truly is a remarkable experience.
