For just a few dollars a month, we have access to more media than we could actually consume in a lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything with commercials seems too slow now that we can go straight through without even stopping unless we chose to take a bathroom or snack break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix has proudly proclaimed that binge watching has become the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/netflix-declares-binge-watching-is-the-new-normal-235713431.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new normal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They also continue to make it easier to watch the next episode with automatic play, so indulging in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicgentleman.net\/2013\/10\/the-seven-deadly-sins-sloth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aecidia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a truly passive activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Numbers of Our Binge Watching Habits<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are over 40 million users on Netflix from the US watching around 10 billion hours a month (as of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/files.shareholder.com\/downloads\/NFLX\/47469957x0x821407\/DB785B50-90FE-44DA-9F5B-37DBF0DCD0E1\/Q1_15_Earnings_Letter_final_tables.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April 15, 2015<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 4 in 10 homes in the US subscribe to Netflix, Amazon or Hulu.(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2015\/03\/11\/media\/nielsen-report-netflix-amazon-hulu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March 2015<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51% of Millennials use Netflix (as of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/files.shareholder.com\/downloads\/NFLX\/47469957x0x821407\/DB785B50-90FE-44DA-9F5B-37DBF0DCD0E1\/Q1_15_Earnings_Letter_final_tables.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April 15, 2015<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">76% of TV streamers say watching multiple episodes of a great TV show is a welcome refuge from their busy lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65% of TV streamers said that if they took a digital time out, they would still want to watch TV.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% of TV streamers say they would rather stream a good TV show than read a friend&#8217;s social media posts. Innocent intentions seeking needed rest and time of leisure. Just like everything else, it needs moderation and temperance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were various <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2015\/02\/04\/383527370\/does-binge-watching-make-us-depressed-good-question\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier this year that revealed a connection in between binge watching and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/index.php\/2015\/08\/7-signs-it-could-be-depression\/#.VcuW4xNVhBc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The emphasis is on connection, not causation, but the tie is an indicator of what compels us to watch for so many hours on end. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escapism is a useful tool we use to find mental balance, but it can also be <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/how-to-snap-back-to-reality-when-escapism-becomes-av-1723091630\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when we use it to avoid our responsibilities and relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHabit, if not resisted, soon becomes necessity.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>-St. Augustine<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>How Much Streaming is too Much?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest questions about this topic always surround limits. Our ties to streaming our media already run deep, so <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2014\/02\/when-exactly-does-watching-a-lot-of-netflix-become-a-binge\/283844\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when, exactly does watching Netflix become a \u2018binge\u2019?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several definitions that quantify time for surveys &#8211; most that go to a generous 4 episodes. Although, that is more for calculations of this classification, we need to address real life application. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Momentarily checking out for an episode of your favorite show or movie can be fun and even a bond experience for families and friends. There are also many rich works of visual art and storytelling rightly worth experiencing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of every day, we need to account for all our actions and time spent. Watching media for consecutive hours can be a rushing force that takes you along until you take back your time. I know even for myself, I got caught up in the comfort of the couch and just wanted to know how the story was going to go. Hours later, I realized how much time I had lost and how many tasks got neglected. Other responsibilities later suffered because of a domino effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The most devastating part of consuming so much content is the false sense of accomplishment. There are almost always alternatives that could be more beneficial for us and our community. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are no uninteresting things, only uninterested people.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2015 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/7014283.G_K_Chesterton\">G.K. Chesterton<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our time is precious, and we have a genuine responsibility to account for every moment in life, but that shouldn\u2019t drive us to live in fear.
