{"id":114810,"date":"2015-05-21T07:30:52","date_gmt":"2015-05-21T12:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.austincnm.com\/?p=114810"},"modified":"2015-05-22T10:26:05","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T15:26:05","slug":"corpus-christi-procession-one-heart-and-soul-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atxcatholic.com\/index.php\/2015\/05\/corpus-christi-procession-one-heart-and-soul-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Corpus Christi Procession &#8211; &#8220;One Heart and Soul\u201d (Part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-114811\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.austincnm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/PopeFrancisHoldingMonstrance-550x309.jpg?resize=550%2C309\" alt=\"PopeFrancisHoldingMonstrance\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The upcoming, June 7, 2015, Corpus Christi procession unites the Austin, English and Spanish communities, as when the early Church was a <i>\u201cCommunity of believers [that] was of one heart and soul.\u201d<\/i> (Acts 4:32) \u00a0\u00a0From the very beginning the early Christians were a convergence of a trilingual culture, so public statements were often,<i> \u201cWritten in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek,\u201d<\/i> (Jn. 19:20).<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis\u2019 message for the Corpus Christi procession states that, <i>\u201cHe makes us go from being a multitude to being a community, from being strangers to being in communion.\u201d\u00b9<\/i>\u00a0Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, when writing on the Corpus Christi procession said, <i>\u201cThe public nature and the given structure of worship remained, so that people who otherwise never meet were brought together.\u201d<\/i> \u00b2 He lamented that we hurry past each other and that our cities are places of solitude of a type never seen before where people are most lonely, abandoned, and deserted even though they live in apartment complexes that are very near to each other; therefore, we must have confidence, <i>&#8220;Once more trusting each other, opening up to each other, and together letting ourselves be led by Him.&#8221;\u00b3<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The Church\u2019s rite on Eucharistic processions found in <i>Eucharistic Worship Outside of Mass<\/i> states that, <i>\u201cIt [the procession] can truly be a sign of common faith and adoration\u201d<\/i> (102) when different groups with their banners come together. \u00a0Of course Cardinal Ratzinger when writing about Corpus Christi reminds us that <i>\u201cWhat unites us today is not the private interest of this group or that, but the interest that God takes in us to which we can calmly confide all our own interests and wishes.\u201d\u2074<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The Church&#8217;s rite further explains that on that day, <i>\u201cIt is fitting to hold some kind of public celebration for the entire city.\u201d<\/i> (102) In the past we had two large processions <i>\u201cthrough the streets\u201d<\/i> (101) coming and leaving &#8220;<i>the Cathedral Church,&#8221;<\/i> (102) but now we will unite them so that, <i>\u201cThe Christian people may give public witness to faith and devotion toward this Sacrament.\u201d<\/i> (101)<\/p>\n<p>Uniting the processions will create a very large gathering never seen before in our city but it is for the purpose of taking \u201c<i>A procession through the public streets which yearly fills with joy those who partake in it,\u201d<\/i> (143) as <i>Redemptionis Sacramentum<\/i> recommends. \u00a0This 2004 document further states, \u201c<i>New ways should be sought of holding them [processions] in today\u2019s conditions,\u201d<\/i> (144) so this year we will process through the heart of the city and state going from Saint Mary Cathedral to the State Capitol, to the University of Texas Tower, and into the University Catholic Center for 12 noon mass.<\/p>\n<p>This year, two cultures &#8211; Spanish and English &#8211; will unite as one heart and soul, <i>\u201cTranscending our own prejudices, our limits and our barriers, going forward, going toward Him, and moving to the point at which we can meet each other.\u201d\u2075<\/i> \u00a0Let us beseech Our Lord, <i>&#8220;Gather us together from <\/i><b><i>all<\/i><\/b><i> corners of the earth. Unite your Church, unite wounded humanity! Give us your salvation!
